Diet soda is definitely one of the worst things you can consume. Although the producers claim their soda is a healthy option, the drinks are incredibly harmful for our health and responsible to numerous diseases and conditions.

Recently, scientists from the University of Iowa did a study on the effects of aspartame (a sugar alternative) on our health which revealed everything we weren’t supposed to know about diet drinks. The study was led by Dr. Ankur Vyas and examined more than 60 000 people over nearly 10 years.

The people who consumed 2 or more cans of diet soda every day had a 50% higher risk of heart disease and 30% higher risk of cardiovascular problems. What’s even more shocking is that the results came after the team adjusted other factors such as BMI, age, smoking and physical activity. According to the authors, the study shows just how dangerous aspartame is.

According to statistics, 1 in every 5 Americans drinks a can of soda every day, which accounts for 17% of the American population. Although the study doesn’t directly link cardiovascular disease with aspartame, it’s implied thanks to other studies.

Studies in the past have discovered that the artificial sweetener can increase the risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease, and may also be linked to depression. Depression promotes habits which can lead to cardiovascular problems such as physical inactivity, alcohol abuse and smoking, which shows just how dangerous aspartame is. Furthermore, studies have linked the compound to the following health problems:

  • Dizziness;
  • Lupus;
  • Stomachache;
  • Seizures;
  • Aggressive behavior;
  • Fibromyalgia;
  • Anxiety;
  • Obesity;
  • Diabetes;
  • Headaches;
  • Alzheimer’s disease;
  • Personality changes.
